The Backbone of Boardmasters’ Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy

Boardmasters Foundation

Established in 2017, the Boardmasters Foundation was born out of a desire to give back and support the culture and surrounding communities that are at the heart of the festival.

The Boardmasters Foundation has built on and grown the annual fundraising and charitable donations that the festival already made year-on-year. Boardmasters has been raising money for good causes and projects since 2002.

Over the years they have supported a variety of local charities, organisations and projects from Surfers Against Sewage and the UK Pro Surf, to the Porth Residents Committee, the Porth Town Band and St Mawgan Minis Football Club and many more.

What is the Foundation’s Giving Strategy?

Each year Boardmasters raises funds for the foundation, they then review which projects and charities will be supported with one-off donations that year whilst continuing to work with long-term partners such as Surfers Against Sewage.

The Foundation aims to support individuals, groups, charities and organisations that fall under one or more of its key pillars of focus – culture and community.

Culture

  • Recipients or organisations that are heavily involved with and promote surfing, music, creativity, education and/or Cornish culture.

Community

  • Recipients or organisations in the immediate festival vicinity, (Newquay, Porth, Whipsiderry, Tregurrian, Watergate Bay and Fistral) that enhance or support the lives of  locals in the area.
  • Recipients or organisations within the county of Cornwall, that are involved with supporting diversity and inclusion (accessibility, gender equality, LGBTQIA+, POC and minority groups) and/or improving and raising awareness of societal issues such as (but not limited to) homelessness, mental health and negative environmental impacts.

How Does GivingWorks Support the Strategy?

With so many brands on their books, Vision Nine Group, the organisation behind the Boardmasters Festival and Foundation, needed a solution that could minimise the administrative burden of running a full scale charitable foundation.

In 2017, they looked to GivingWorks to provide a time and cost-efficient solution that could handle the legal, reporting and accounting responsibilities associated with setting up and managing a charitable foundation.

To this day the Boardmasters Foundation sits under the GivingWorks umbrella of foundations, where we continue to underpin the infrastructure and remove the administrative heavy lifting, leaving Vision Nine and everyone else associated with the foundation free to concentrate on maximising its charitable impact year-on-year.
